The Society of United Fishermen was established at Heart's Content in 1873 and Dawe Lodge No. 82 S.U.F., Bay Roberts, was granted its Charter in 1924.
The Society, which exists across the province of Newfoundland, was formed to assist fisherman and their families in times of need and has been known for its generosity. The four arms of the cross formed 8 points which represented the 8 Beatitudes. The three primary colours--red, white, and blue--represented Love, Purity, and Fidelity.
