Our name "NONIA" is derived from the initial letters of the "Newfoundland Outport Nursing and Industrial Association." For 90 years NONIA has been proud to showcase the best in a variety of handmade items, which reflect the spirit and tradition of Newfoundland and Labrador. NONIA is a manufacturing and a retail operation located in downtown St. John's. We produce a full range of classic and contemporary knits for men, women, children and infants including many styles of sweaters, hats, mitts & socks.
NONIA employs approximately 175 knitters and weavers across the province. It was established in 1924 to assist Newfoundland outport communities to access health services by raising money from the sale of hand-knit garments to pay the salaries of public health nurses. The non-profit cottage industry, run by a volunteer board and small staff, continues today with the products still being hand-made by Newfoundland and Labrador women in busy homes and lively kitchens around the province. Some of these women have been knitting and weaving for NONIA for over 50 years. Each knitted garment is individually produced to exacting standards and the NONIA label is your assurance of high quality and customer satisfaction.
2012 recipient of a Manning Award (Historic Sites) for Excellence in the Public Presentation of Historic Places, which celebrates the work of the organization in preserving and presenting this provinces history and heritage.
