Operated by a non-for-profit board (Fortune Head ECO Friends Inc.), this facility was officially opened in 2006. The Fortune Head Interpretation Centre houses the self-guided “Trapped in Time” exhibit that includes a collection of artifacts (fossils), audio/visual clips, and interactive activities. The gift shop carries a selection of site-specific products and local crafts and coffee/baked goods are available to the early morning traveler. The centre promotes the significant find at the Fortune Head Ecological Reserve.
The Fortune Head Ecological Reserve is recognized as a global stratotype by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). Geologists call the fossil find at Fortune head the golden spike reflecting the boundary between Precambrian and Cambrian periods, one of the most significant in the entire world because the global stratotype is accessible, is easy to relate to other similar sedimentary rock formations elsewhere in the world, and shows a thick, unbroken sequence of trace fossil types across the Precambrian and Cambrian boundary.
Seasons Open: Late May to early October
