The Brother Brennan Environmental Education Centre is nestled near a pond in a remote area of the Avalon Forest. It is a wonderful destination for wilderness retreats, workshops and summer camps. Used by school groups midweek in spring and fall, it is available for rent by environmentally thoughtful groups on week-ends and during the school summer break.

The Centre offers a perfect base for self-guided canoeing, hiking, nature studies, trout fishing (in season), orienteering or simply relaxing in the wilderness. There are trails through the forest and a permanent orienteering course. In winter the main buildings are closed, but two rustic cabins with wood stoves and outhouses are available as shelters for small groups for  winter camping. The last 6 km (3.7 mi) of woods road are not plowed and so winter access is by snow-shoe, x-country skiing or skidoo.

Number of Persons Cottage or Cabin Will Accommodate: 70 people in cookhouse and bunkhouse in spring through fall. 20 people for winter camping.

Structure Access

Turn off the Trans Canada Highway at junction 35. Follow route 90, known as Salmonier Line, for 9 km (5.6 mi) towards St Mary’s Bay. Turn right onto Vineland Road, a dirt road, which is located beside a driveway that features stone lions sitting on gateposts, and follow it for 7 km (4.3 mi) at which point turn right (this is the 4th turn on the right).  Drive a further 6km (3.7 mi) and you will see a large sign about the wind turbines on the right hand side of the road which marks the entrance to the Centre. The buildings are a further 500 m (1640 feet) down this driveway. Please be aware that it is necessary to limit your speed on the 13 km (8 mi) of dirt road which normally takes about 30 minutes. Take your time and enjoy the woods, ponds, and any wildlife that you may see on the way.

Warming Source

Propane or Natural Gas Heater

Kitchen Supplies Available (if any)

There is a well stocked kitchen suitable for catering for up to 70 people. There are propane stoves, a microwave, two refrigerators, and a freezer.

What to Bring

Bring sleeping bags, pillows, and your own towels. Mattresses are provided.

Nightly Rate or Fee (if any): Depends on number and whether meals are provided - see website

Accessibility Notes

The bunkhouse, upstairs in the cookhouse, and some of the washrooms are wheelchair accessible, but the ground between buildings and the trails are rough and sloped, which make wheeling a bit more of a challenge.

 Eco-Friendly Notes

The Centre's electricity is primarily made by wind turbines. The Centre teaches a no waste policy to students and encourages other visitors to try for the same.

 Locally or Family-Owned Business Notes

The Brother Brennan Environmental Education Centre is operated by a registered charity whose primary goal is to educate local school children about the environment in a wilderness setting. All profits from rentals, workshops, etc help support the school environmental programs.

 Pet Friendly Notes
A great place for dogs, but please keep them out of the kitchen and off the beds.
