The Geotourism posting of the Atlantic Charter Historic Site states, "The historic site in Ship Harbour commemorates the drawing up of one of the most remarkable documents in history, the Atlantic Charter."
These pictures show the historic site that has been developed associated with that event located next to the waters of Placentia Bay where Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Winston Spencer Churchill met in secret near Ship Harbour and a short distance from Argentia. It was here they drew up the document that would also be the foundation for the United Nations.
A small park like setting has been established by Parks Canada about 2 km (1.2 mi.) from the community accessed by a gravel road. The attached pictures give an idea of what that site is like. The main monument shows Churchill and Roosevelt passing an envelope indicating agreement had been reached, however there was no signed agreement.
For more information about the secret meeting and the agreement visit the Atlantic Charter Foundation website. For photos of a celebration in 2012 to celebrate the 70 anniversary of the event go here: photos. A report on that celebration is attached and noted under the photographs.
